Video of the Week – Van DAMME, he’s Back! Epic Splits with Volvo and GoDaddy

“Now I stand here before you … what you see is a body crafted to perfection … a pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of physics … and a mindset to master the most epic of splits …”

In the past few months we’ve been witness to the most epic of re-births, the Van Damme Splits! Yes, he’s back and so are his “legs engineered to defy the laws of physics”.

Van Damme has championed 2 absurd and surreal commercials for GoDaddy’s small business campaign and most recently a stunt for Volvo Trucks. I’m not quite sure what to make of all this? I remember when Van Damme was bigger than Stallone, ok sort of, and his splits were famous. But that was a long time ago.

Screen Shot 2013-11-18 at 9.46.24 PMI can’t lie, as a child I was a HUGE Van Damme fan and yes his splits were epic. I’ll never forgot that scene in Bloodsport when “Fran Dux” first arrives in Hong Kong and he’s meditating in his hotel room with his legs up on 2 chairs doing the splits. Ray Jackson, played by Donald Gibb, walks in and says “That just hurts me looking at it!”. From that moment on I was sold. All I wanted to do was become a martial artist and enter the kumite. So my parents signed me up for Tae Kwon Do lessons and eventually I was suspended from school for breaking some kid’s leg. Time away from school allowed me to spend more time with my Apple II. So, I guess I owe my career to Van Damme?

Ok, back to the business of this post. Let’s take a look at the videos in question and you be the judge of whether or not they qualify as epic splits!
