You are on your way to destruction.
Recently I was digging through some old video games buried away in my closet. A friend of mine, who was there while I was dusting off old game cases, muddled the words in his best robot voice “All Your Base Are Belong To Us” and instantly I was reminded of one of the greatest, geekiest, and earliest online memes of all time!
Ok, for those of you who aren’t in the know this week I’m going to school you on one of the first ever internet memes – All Your Base Are Belong To Us.
What was originally a broken english phrase from the opening cutscene of the 1991 European Sega Mega Drive version of the video game Zero Wing developed into one of the worlds first animated GIF memes. This meme initially spread like a virus, long before the term viral existed, through email, forums, chat groups and websites. It eventually grew beyond the cult and appeared in numerous articles, books, comics and webcomics, clothing, movies, radio shows, songs, and television shows.
Sometimes shortened to “AYBABTU“, or “AYB“, geeks around the world, more specifically gaming geeks, threw these shortened pieces of text around the web like gang sings.
Today the meme has appeared in various formats and languages all over the world. There is no official number of views – because there are too many to count!
Long before YouTube this meme was originally created as animated GIF and eventually became a Flash animation. Below is the original meme transferred to a YouTube video – enjoy!
